post 7 - different media producers

Post 7 - Producers/Directors Research:

Research 2 different Media Producers/Directors/Photographers (depending on your chosen media brief) and watch some of the products they have made.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:
·       What similarities and differences can you see?
·       What elements of media language are you noticing?
·       Do they have a particular style?
·       Do they only work on particular genres of media?

Introduction: In this post  I will be looking at and studying tow famous photographers and see the type of photography they do , as this will help me create and get ideas for my own images I use for my magazine.

Research two different photographers:

BRUCE WEBER

MARIO TESTINO

Guy Bourdin

Conclusion: From this research I have learnt that many photos from these famous photographers are natural as they are dressed basic and just staring in the camera or looking away. I have also included a fashion photographer which uses colour because in my magazine I will be using colour , but also shots like Mario Testino does.

post 6 - Institution research

Post 6
 – Institution research:
What type of media products do they produce? (print, audio visual, audio, online).
What type of company is it? (independent? Does it have a parent company? Is it a subsidiary company? Is it an international company? Is it a cross media company? Is it a commercial company or a public service?
What is the ethos/mission statement/values of the company? How does this reflect on the company’s work? How can you incorporate these values/ethos/mission statement into your idea?

Introduction: In task 6 I am going to research the famous Bauer magazine , as that is who I am going to use to promote my magazine.

Bauer

What type of media products do they produce? (print, audio visual, audio, online).
Bauer also produce radio , digital and tv products , as well as magazines.

What type of company is it? (independent? Does it have a parent company? Is it a          subsidiary company? Is  it an international company?
The type of company Bauer is is an international company therefore its worldwide and there products are seen and used all around the world.

Is it a cross media company? Is it a commercial company or a public service?

Bauer is a cross media company and commercial , this is because it isn't a public website as any one can access the website and look at the information.

What is the ethos/mission statement/values of the company? How does this reflect on the company’s                        work?
Bauers mission and aim is to connect audiences with excellent content through our broad multi touch point brand platforms.
“Winning Together Through Passion, Innovation and Speed”

How can you incorporate these values/ethos/mission statement into your idea?
I can cooperate these ideas and values of wanting to be a passionate company and connect to my target audience with the range of fashion ideas and information they will be receiving from my magazine.

Conclusion: From task 6 I have learnt how a famous media product " Bauer" present their work and their aims towards their audience. This will help me with creating my magazine.

This is on the closers website, to show that they use Bauer to promote their magazines.

This picture above is a screenshot from the Bauer website, which shows what magazines use Bauer such as Closer , Heat and Bike. In my magazine I will link to other pages like Bauer does , to show my audience the range of variety within my magazine.

Post 5 - make the text appealing to an intended audience

Post 5 – How is media theory used in 2 media products and how these make the text appealing to an intended audience?

Introduction: In task 5 I will be learning about how magazine covers are presented and how models pose to get a message across and how there is always a reason behind the pictures.

Male Gaze - women are objectified in the media for the viewing pleasure of hetrosexual men. This is done by the mise en scene of what she's wearing as her boobs are out in a short dress and she's staring into the camera in a sexy way. Also, the text around the image is in Spanish and sounds sexual as its saying about the passion in the bedroom and being naked. This image would make it interesting to an intended audience because men would like how the women is dressed and the way she looks.

     Feminist Theory – Bell Hooks

In this front cover of the magazine the model is wearing a grey suit this could be linked to the media theory of ending partriachy as she is dressed like a man and men wont see this look as sexy as if she was in a short dress.

Conclusion: From this post I have learnt that there is reasons behind pictures used on vogue magazines and messages behind why they have used that particular image. For example , the women wearing a suit to show she is powerful and men can't control her. This gives me a way to promote Bell Hooks idea and radical feminism by portraying the women I use as feminine and using a radical feminist approach according to Van Zoonen of a text on my front cover saying " who run the world girls".

post 4 - How combinations of media language elements are used to create meaning

Post 4 – How combinations of media language elements are used to create meaning and construct representations that address and appeal to an intended audience?

Introduction: How combinations of media language elements are used to create meaning and construct representations that address and appeal to an intended audience.

The layout of this Elle magazine front cover is neat and professional with a main image and small texts around Rita Ora. The layout is based on one single image surrounded by non - invasive cover line , which means it don't look messy and you can focus on the main image. The typography of the masthead of the magazine is bold , which connotes the title of the magazine , however the little subtitles , the font is swirly  in words like " love". The fact that " summer fashion" is in white could suggest new and innocence." Summer fashion" is written in italics and in white which could suggest love is pure. The masthead is pink , which matches in with Rita's skirt and the colour pink is feminine and girly. The coverlines on the front of the magazine are all linking to Rita being in love , for example, " Im in love for the first time" , this could suggest why the main image of Rita she isn't wearing a top and showing off her big cherub tattoo. Furthermore, in the headline " silver sandals" the word silver is in bold and not sandals , which could suggest that silver is more classy and seems expensive , also it could suggest the colour silver is coming into trend this summer. There is only one main image which draws attention to Rita Ora and she is glaring into the camera in a sexy way.

The layout of this Vogue magazine is similar to the Elle magazine , in the fact that it is professional , with a main image of a well known celebrity , Selena Gomez. The layout of this magazine is also based on one single image surrounded by non - invasive coverlines , which means it looks professional. The typography of the title of the magazine if a bold red colour , which connotes the summer as its bright and the background is leaves which links to the summer and tropical. Also , Selena is posing in a floral pink outfit , which could give the target audience fashion advice and tips , and the cover line says " Selena gets real" which shows she's trying to express herself. There is only one main image in the centre of the magazine of Selena posing and her arm above her head looking straight into the camera in a sexy way.

Conclusion: In task 4 I learnt ways in which magazines are set out and how celebrities pose in magazines and subtitles based around the magazine.

Task 3 - intertexuality

Post 3 – How and why is intertextuality employed in 2 media products and what effect does this have in their intended audience?

Introduction: In this post I am going to be learning about how and why intertextuality is employed and the affects it has on the audiences.

This is an example of intertextuality , this is because in the Vogue cover they are linking it to a story/book. Vogue has been inspired for this magazine as the gorilla in the book is carrying the woman and saving her, this suggests vogue have recreated this with a muscly black man to show they can protect and look after the stereotypical white women. Vogue has used to black man, which is presenting the gorilla in the cover, also the gorilla has his mouth open as if he is angry or screaming , vogue has represented this as the black man has his mouth open in the shot as well. As in the cover of the book " destroy this mad brute " the girl is being carried like a princess who is acting as a "damsel in distress" figure. Whereas in the Vogue shot she is smiling and happy with the man near her holding her waist , which could suggest she feels safe and secure around the black man. Intertextuality has been used here as LeBron is rein acting the gorilla , however its been slightly changed to suit the purpose and layout of Vogue. They have also used intertextuality as they have changed the gorilla from holding a bloody bat in the book cover to a basketball in the Vogue cover to suit LeBrons career.

The effect this has on their intended audiences is that audiences may have a negotiated or rejected reading , mainly rejected this is because , it could be seen a racist towards black people as they are portraying the black man as a gorilla. This could also been seen as sexiest as the man is seen to be protecting the women which could show her as weak and the victim.

This is another example of intertextuality as Liam Gallagher is doing a similar pose as the famous David Beckham. The way he is staring into the camera and its a close up shows the intertextuality of the front cover.
The effect this has on their intended audiences is that it has a negotiated reading , as people may have an opinion or argue the views of the two front covers. Women will be more interested in David Beckham , people may read this and reject this due to the front cover of Liam Gallagher and people may not find him as attractive.

Conclusion: In this task of intertextuality I have learnt how magazines copy and use similar covers for an effect , and to show intertextuality.

Task 2

Post 2 – Genre research: How are genre conventions used in 2 media products?

Introduction: In the task I am going to be looking at genre conventions used in two types of media products. I hope to use works such as body language and mise en scene.

Conclusion: From this task I have learnt that different genres have different conventions. I have also learnt that different styles and target audiences magazines use very different pictures and layout their magazines very differently.

task 1 - Magazine Brief

Learning Objectives:

  • K: What the minimum requirements for the preparatory tasks.
  • U: The relevance of each of these tasks.
  • BAT: Undertake preparatory work as prescribed below.
  • CO: Use media terminology throughout verbal and written communication.
Introduction: In this task I am going to be researching the history of magazines and when they were first published.

Magazine brief:

  1. When and what was the first magazine ever created? - The earliest example of magazines was Erbauliche Monaths Unterredungen, a literary and philosophy magazine , which was launched in 1663 in Germany. The Gentleman's Magazine, first published in 1731, in London was the first general - interest magazine.
  2. When and what was the first fashion magazine published? - published on November 2, 1867. The issues discussed in the first issue of Harper's Bazar are not different from concerns of twenty-first century women.
  3. When and what was the first fashion magazine to go online? - was called Hilary Magazine ,published by a 15 year old Hilary Rowland about body image.
  4. When and what was the first fashion magazine to publish a front page using a model from an ethnic minority? -  African - American model Beverly Johnson , reflects on becoming the first black cover model of American Vogue in 1974.

  5. When and what was the first fashion magazine aimed at men published - The first American magazines were published in 1741. Created to be " all things to all men", esquire covered fashion , music and culture.
  6. When and what was the first fashion magazine aimed at women to feature a man in the front cover? - The first "female" magazine appeared in 1963 in London, featuring a man on the front cover.
Conclusion: In this task it has helped me get some background information on the history of magazines and how long they have been around for and being created. It has also helped me see the changes in the years with the production of magazines and how the front covers have changed.

Location Infomation

Introduction: The purpose of this task is to assess and identify the locations I am going to use for my photos and videos.

Address: Harris Academy Chafford Hundred , Mayflower Road , RM16 6SA
This location is suitable because it is a place where I can gather all my photos for my magazine and get the professional look. It means I am also creating and taking my pictures in my school in my media classroom , which is beneficial as I can take the best photos with the camera against the white background. This location is also suitable as it has all the equipment needed for my photoshoot.  However, the risks and hazards this location has is that the white screen could fall down when I am taking my pictures. Also, the lights  am using can get very hot and the room may become over crowded , which could lead to people tripping.

Image result for side street in london

Address: Shoreditch, London N1 6BY
This location is suitable because it is different from the usual background of photoshoots. Also , the fact that both of your front covers needed to be different , I didn't want to just change my models clothes, therefore I thought I would be even more creative and use a street background. However, a risk the location could've had is that it could get crowded, leading ,me to take pictures with people in the background. Also, the photos were being taken on a side road, so another risk could've been cars entering and emerging.

Another location I used to take photos was my bedroom , I used this location when creating pictures for my contents page. For example I used my bed when laying out my prom dress. A hazard however, could be lighting or tripping.

The last location I used was my garden , this is because one of my front covers was about spring and summer outfits, therefore taking pictures in my garden meant I could pose in summer outfits. However, a problem with this location is the weather as it could rain , which would ruin my pictures.

History in fashion magazines

Does the fashion industry still need Vogue in the age of social media?

Thus, the glossy magazine doesn’t have the power it once did. While Vogue transports the reader to a fantasy world of high fashion – in much the same way watching a film offers an escape from the everyday – and is still seen by many as the bastion of high-end style, the magazine’s influence has nevertheless been diluted.

The evolution of technology and social media has allowed all consumers to have a voice

History

The first issue of Vogue saw the light in 1892 in America. In 1909 the magazine was acquired by Conde Naste Publishers. The magazine's volume became thicker and its main focus was turned on women. ... Another important period in American Vogue history began in 1988, when Anna Wintour became its Chief Editor.

Preparatory tasks

1 (a) Research

In preparation for the production task, learners should carry out research into professionally produced media products that are similar in genre, style and form to the media products proposed in their chosen production brief.

Learners should deconstruct, analyse and make notes on these professionally produced media products so that they can further develop knowledge and understanding of their chosen media form’s distinctive media language, for example:

• how genre conventions are employed
• how and why intertextuality is employed
• how combinations of media language elements are used to create meaning and construct representations that address an intended audience.

Learners should be prepared to analyse the distinctive media language elements appropriate to the brief chosen, listed below:

Moving image (television/music video) as part of a cross-media brief:
• camerawork
• editing
• soundtrack
• mise en scène.

Radio as part of a cross-media brief:
• use of music
• use of voice
• use of sound effects.

Magazines as part of a cross-media brief:
• layout
• typography
• use of language
• use of images.

Online media as part of a cross-media brief:
• layout
• navigation
• use of language
• use of images/text/audio/video.

1 (b) Planning

Learners should produce planning materials for their individual NEA cross-media production which outline the intentions of their final production.

Candidates are encouraged to explore appropriate ways of producing relevant planning materials based upon their own strengths and resources.

The following list of planning materials is purely indicative:
• draft script
• storyboard
• location report(s)
• notes on casting and mise-en-scène considerations
• mock-up of a print advert layout or mock-up of a webpage
• rough cuts/drafts
• audience research and feedback.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • K: The requirements for each of the briefs set by OCR.
  • U: How to approach the chosen brief, including writing the statement of intent.
  • BAT: Choose a brief and start writing the statement of intent.
  • CO: Use media terminology (all four areas of the theoretical framework) in your written and verbal communication.

The brief i have decided to choose is Brief 3 - magazines and online. I have chosen this brief in particular because it is based around fashion , which will interest me when making the magazine. The skills I already have that can help produce my chosen media texts , is that I have experience with making and designing magazines, also the fact that its based around fashion , I will have more knowledge based around this. The skills I tend to develop whilst working on my media text is to learn more about the content pages and what to include when making a retail magazine.

Ideas linked to my brief:
  • Take my own pictures of fashion
  • articles about fashion and inspiration
  • editing pictures included to make my magazine unique
  • original title and logo
  • target celebrities
